We Rise!
C
elebrating the remarkable accomplishments and creative contributions of women composers, poets, and performers throughout history

This performance celebrates a millennium of women composers who have courageously defied social norms to give voice to their music, often without support and, in some cases, in the face of staunch opposition. We Rise! will highlight the works of trailblazing composers such as Kassiani (b. 810 AD), the earliest female composer whose music has survived to the present day, and Hildegard of Bingen (b. 1098), who paved the way for other women to succeed in a number of fields from theology to music. This program also includes the world premiere of Sister Among Sisters, a new work written for In Mulieribus by Anna Song, IM’s co-founding Artistic Director and Conductor, featuring poetry by Rogue Valley poet Tiziana DellaRovere.

Tiziana DellaRovere is an accomplished writer of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. She has written three librettos for operas by composer Ethan Gans-Morse and poetry for their program symphony, How Can You Own The Sky?, their oratorio of Covid pandemic stories, Six Feet Apart, and numerous art songs and choral collaborations. Tiziana dedicates her writings and visual art to highlighting contemporary issues of social justice, equality, and inclusion.

In Mulieribus will be joined by composer and guest accompanist, John Vergin, on piano and organ. Vergin is accompanist and continuo player for Portland’s Bach Cantata Choir, organist at St. Rose of Lima church, and singer/assistant organist at Holy Rosary church. He teaches singing privately at home, and has been a singing teacher and coach at Reed since 1995.
